Engineering is one of the most sought after options among students seeking post secondary education in Punjab. Punjab boasts of well over 50 engineering colleges that provide quality technical education in varied engineering fields like civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, computer science and more. Apart from these four or five ‘staple’ disciplines, a few others like agricultural engineering and biotechnology have made strong inroads in engineering education curriculum in Punjab.
As Punjab is a primarily agricultural state, the branch of agriculture engineering is a top priority among various state government engineering offices while recruiting for eligible graduates. Admission process in colleges/universities in the engineering sphere in Punjab is as varied as the types of institutes that provide education in this field. While IIT JEE is the benchmark of excellence for many colleges, many have their own admission criteria.
This gives an impression of openness in the admission system of Punjab, with no single standard being given a priority over another. Although it may seem confusing for the students at first, this competition is eventually beneficial for them because it filters the meritorious students from others. As a side note, it is to be noted that some of these institutes are world class institutes and are good enough to be in the list of top private engineering colleges in India and Asia.
